Starting a business is one of the hardest things someone can do. If you’re in the process of starting a business, you know that already. There are so many things to get done, it seems like you’ll never finish them all. But often, we spend so much time and energy on the small things that we forget to consider the big picture, which is really the most important part. Here are a few thoughts on thinking big, and planning for success.

There will always be more things…

And there will always be more time to do them. Attempting to complete all of your smaller tasks before tackling the bigger ones is a recipe for failure. Take a break. All of those little things you feel the need to do will still be there when you get back to them. Except this time, you’ll have a better understanding of what they lead to, and why you’re doing them.

Expansion is good!

There are some business startups that are already as big as they want to be. Maybe the owner always dreamed of opening a bakery, and now has one employee and does what he loves, and doesn’t want anything else. There’s nothing wrong with that, but in most cases, the goal of the company is to grow. Growing is a good thing, and is likely if you’re good at what you do, but one of the worst things would be growing even faster than you expect, and then not being able to handle it. As much as you can, plan for success in all shapes and sizes so that whenever you have an opportunity, you’ll be able to fully take advantage of it.

Planning for success will save you money and resources later…

Growing faster than you can handle can actually cost you a lot of money and resources. For example, if you outgrow your office before you’ve found a new one, you may have to halt your growth, because you don’t have enough staff to manage it. You’ll also likely end up rushing into a contract with an office building that is too expensive, and not quite what you want. This may even lead to losing employees and clients.
