Companies like Can-Am Wireless, LLC, based in Irving, Texas, have put their heads together to develop technologies that can ensure that employees and patrons stay safe. Can-Am Wireless, in particular, has invented a temperature screening kiosk that can be positioned at the entrance of medical centers and other businesses to monitor body temperature.
With the coronavirus crisis not yet behind us, we’ve all had to make changes in the way we go about our daily lives. For many, it means not leaving the house. In this case, we’ve had to get creative learning to shop remotely, work from home, and entertain ourselves from the comforts of our own home. For others that have decided to venture out shopping or grab dinner out on a restaurant patio, it has required donning a facemask, lathering up with hand sanitizer, and even wearing gloves to stop cross-contamination from items that our skin might come into contact with.
The reality is that we’re not going to be able to stay on lock-down forever. And many businesses and restaurants have built the necessary precautions to keep employees and patrons safe. For restaurants, this means ensuring tables are at least six feet apart and that workers wear face masks. For retailers, employees must wear masks, and shoppers must follow these guidelines as well. For medical centers, it means conducting health screenings at the entryway to ensure that anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 is directed appropriately.
Can-Am is Monitoring Body Temperature to Reduce the Spread of COVID-19
One of the main symptoms of COVID-19 is high body temperature, precisely, a temperature of 103 degrees or higher. Though not all infected with COVID-19 will present with a fever, it is indeed a common symptom. According to the World Health Organization, outside of a dry cough and fatigue, a high temperature represents nearly 88% of COVID-19 cases.
Founded in 2001, Can-Am Wireless is a privately-held, and minority-held telecommunications and information technology hardware and software provider focused on serving Fortune 500 organizations across the United States and Canada. Though they have many temperature screening products available for purchase, they have specialized in the “many group temperature screening” products which detect fevers in a non-invasive, no-contact manner.
This screening kiosk was originally manufactured over three years ago to enable access to buildings using facial recognition. However, the kiosk’s intentions were repurposed when it was discovered that Can-Am Wireless’s medical clients were leveraging temperature gun thermometers to take temperatures, and were often getting inaccurate temperature readings. Further, the screenings took up quite a bit of time that nurses could be dedicating to other patients.
There are two operating systems available for the temperature screening kiosk – the Android and the Linux. Both provide seriously fast temperature readings and are accurate to within 0.02 degrees Celsius. The kiosks are ADA compliant, enabling temperature checks for all heights. Though both systems provide ease of use and a substantial degree of accuracy, most large organizations have selected the Linux due to its faster detection speed, more extended distance screening capability, and efficiency.
An Affordable Solution that Doesn’t Slow Us Down
Can-Am Wireless has gone above and beyond by using their technical prowess to repurpose an affordable technology that doesn’t inconvenience users or patrons. The system doesn’t need to be connected to a computer to use. Businesses that elect to use the kiosk need to have access to a power source so that the kiosk can be plugged in.
By leveraging this technology, business owners can better ensure that those entering their business are healthy and virus free. Though no technology is perfect, the degree of precision that these kiosks provide can bring tremendous peace of mind.
We applaud Can-Am Wireless for its efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 by creating an affordable technology that keeps us all healthier and safer.
